The Chemistry of Car Washing — And Why Relationships Matter Just As Much
In the car wash industry, chemistry matters.
Not just what’s going through the arches or flowing through the lines — but the chemistry between people, operators, suppliers, managers, and customers. That’s the part a lot of companies miss.
Anybody can sell soap.
Not everybody can build relationships that helps a wash grow.
Over the years, I’ve learned that the best operators in this industry understand both sides of the business. They understand the chemistry inside the tunnel, but they also understand the chemistry it takes to build trust, consistency, and long-term partnerships.
And honestly, both work the same way.
Great Washes Are Built On Balance
A successful wash package is all about balance.
You need the right pre-soak to break down road film and bugs. You need the right foam application to create lubrication and presentation. You need drying agents and protectants that actually perform instead of just smelling good and sounding flashy on a menu board.
Every product has a purpose.
That’s one of the reasons I’ve always appreciated the engineering behind Koch Chemie USA products.
Products like:
- Koch Chemie Multi Star
- Active Foam
- Alkali Wheel Cleaner
- Protector Wax
- Nano Crystal Polish
- Ceramic Effect Polish
…aren’t designed just to “look good” in a sales presentation. They’re designed to perform in real-world wash environments where operators are trying to balance chemistry performance, labor, speed, customer satisfaction, and cost per car.
That’s the difference between chemistry made for marketing and chemistry made for operators.
Relationships Work The Same Way
Business relationships are no different.
The strongest washes I’ve seen weren’t built because somebody gave the cheapest price. They were built because there was trust between the operator and the people supporting them.
Good business chemistry looks like:
- answering the phone when there’s a problem
- helping solve issues instead of assigning blame
- showing up consistently
- helping operators improve profitability
- training teams
- dialing in applications
- helping reduce downtime
- and actually caring whether the customer succeeds
That’s how lasting business gets built.
Not through transactions.
Through partnerships.
The Industry Has Changed
The car wash industry is more competitive now than it’s ever been.
Everybody has “ceramics.”
Everybody has “graphene.”
Everybody claims they have the best shine, best foam, best protection.
But at the end of the day, operators are still asking the same questions:
- Does the chemistry perform?
- Is it consistent?
- Does the supplier support me?
- Can they help me grow?
- Are they here for the long haul?
Because when things go wrong — and eventually they do in every wash — relationships matter more than marketing.
That’s where real chemistry shows up.
Lasting Business Is Built Over Time
The best car wash operations understand something important:
Customers don’t come back just because a car is shiny one time.
They come back because the experience is consistently good.
The same thing applies to business relationships.
Consistency builds trust.
Trust builds loyalty.
Loyalty builds long-term growth.
That’s true whether you’re talking about wash chemistry, customer relationships, or business partnerships.
At the end of the day, the strongest businesses in this industry aren’t built on hype.
They’re built on good people, good chemistry, and relationships that hold up over time
